Baseline Appeals Research Bot

Information about the automated research bot operated by Baseline Appeals.

Who runs this bot

Baseline Appeals operates this crawler. We build property tax appeal tools for homeowners. To keep our jurisdiction rules and filing deadlines accurate, our research system collects public guidance published by county appraisers, assessors, and state tax boards.

What it fetches

The bot reads public county and state property-tax pages. It collects:

  • Filing deadlines and window dates
  • Appeal rules and hearing procedures
  • Forms, filing instructions, and submission options
  • Public parcel data access and search instructions

The bot visits public web pages over HTTPS. It does not access private accounts, paywalled systems, or confidential records.

How it behaves

The bot operates under these technical rules:

  • Identifies itself: Every request carries a User-Agent header stating the bot name and this URL.
  • Obeys robots.txt: The bot checks robots.txt before requesting a page and obeys all disallow rules.
  • Throttled per host: The bot waits 5 seconds between requests to the same host.
  • Caches responses: Pages are cached locally for 30 days to avoid repeat requests.
  • Read-only: The bot issues GET requests and never submits web forms.

How to opt out

Webmasters can block the bot through robots.txt. The bot checks robots.txt per RFC 9309 and respects disallow directives.

To block the crawler from your site, add this block to your robots.txt file:

User-agent: BaselineAppealsResearchBot
Disallow: /

To block specific directories rather than the whole site:

User-agent: BaselineAppealsResearchBot
Disallow: /admin/
Disallow: /private/

You can also request domain blocklisting by email. When added, our crawler will not contact your domain.
